Life Group Questions

1. If you were not able to hear this week’s sermon, consider going to the church website and listening to it. What are some main ideas you gathered from the sermon? What, if any, questions did the sermon cause for you or do you desire to have additional clarification?

2. Why do you think Jesus waited until the break of dawn to encounter His disciples? How does fishing all night without result relate to the idea in John’s Gospel of darkness? How might this passage be related to Luke 5:4?

3. What are some important aspects of Jesus calling His disciples “children”? What does it mean that only those who become like children will enter the kingdom of heaven (cf. Matthew 18:3)? How does Paul’s teaching in 1 Corinthians 14:20 add clarification to this topic? Would you describe yourself as a mature believer? Why or why not?

4. Look up a few translations of John 21:5 (be sure to look online at the ISV translation). How should we understand this passage and the question posed by Jesus? Why do you think Jesus asked this question in this manner? What does the disciples’ response tell us?

5. Describe the world’s understanding of success. What would you say most people relate to or equate with success? Would you describe yourself as a successful person? Why or why not? How can you become more successful?

6. Read Joshua 1:6-8 and describe God’s prescription and requirements for success. What was the success promised to Joshua? Do you consider Joshua to have been a successful person? Explain.

7. Read the following passages and share some observations about God granting His people success: Genesis 24:40-42; 39:2-23; Jeremiah 9:23-24; Proverbs 28:13-14; 2 Chronicles 26:3-5.

8. Do you think the world considered Jesus as a successful person? Why or why not? What might be some reasons for the world questioning Jesus’ success? Do you consider Jesus to have been a successful person? Explain.

9. Do you believe God always rewards obedience? Why or why not? Are there ever times when obedience is not rewarded by God? Describe any. If Abraham had not demonstrated obedience to God, would the blessing still have come to the nations (cf. Genesis 22:18)? Does God bless disobedient people (cf. James 1:22-25)? Explain.

10. What impresses you about Peter’s response in our passage? How does this fit in with his character? How do you think you would have responded if in the same situation?
