Life Group Questions

1. If you were not able to hear this week’s sermon, consider going to the church website and listening to it. What are some main ideas you gathered from the sermon? What, if any, questions did the sermon cause for you or do you desire to have additional clarification?

2. Since the word translated “charcoal” is only used on one other occasion in the New Testament, what connection if any, should we make between John 18:18 and 21:9? Do you think John expected us to make a connection? Do you think Jesus intended for others to make a connection, and if so what?

3. Read 1 Kings chapters 17-19. List some ways in which the failures of Elijah demonstrated the sufficiency of God. Describe two major lessons to be gained from the story of Elijah.

4. Do you think of God as gentle and merciful? Why or why not? How should we respond to people who depict God as an angry God who judges people? Reflect on and describe some ways in which God has been gentle and merciful to you personally.

5. Do you see the gentleness and mercy of Christ in the story of John 21? Were the disciples worthy of such treatment? How should God’s mercy toward us affect our attitude toward other people (cf. Ephesians 4:32; Colossians 3:12)? What are some specific ways in which we can show God’s mercy and grace to the world around us?

6. Do you ever feel like a failure? What are some things that make you feel inadequate? Why do you think God allows failure? Do you think God is sometimes responsible for our failure? Explain. How does failure point to God’s sufficiency?

7. List some observations about what took place in our passage and what John intended for us to grasp. What is the point to this story for us, the readers? In what way is the Lord possibly challenging or encouraging you through this passage?

8. How should our works – that is, our good deeds – magnify the name of God? What kind of good works are you doing to bring glory to God? How did the catch of fish bring glory to Christ in our passage?

9. What is the significance of John mentioning 153 fish being caught? Read at least two sources (commentaries, internet, etc.) to find possible meanings.

10. What does it mean to be a vessel of honor for the Lord (cf. 2 Timothy 2:19-26)? In what areas of life do you need to improve so that you will be a vessel of honor used by the Lord? Take some time to ask the Lord to cleanse you of impurities and give you a passion to pursue the things of God.
