Life Group Questions

1. If you were not able to hear this week’s sermon, consider going to the church website and listening to it. What are some main ideas you gathered from the sermon? What, if any, questions did the sermon cause for you or do you desire to have additional clarification?

2. Read the other Gospel accounts of our passage in Matthew 27-28, Mark 15 and Luke 24. What are some differences you see in these depictions of the events? How is John’s presentation of the events unique from the others? Do these differences cause you any concern? Explain.

3. Read back through Psalm 2, Isaiah 49:1-7, Isaiah 50:1-6 and Isaiah 52-53. Describe the nature of God’s King. What was specifically predicted about the reception of God’s King? How does this idea fit in with the teaching of John’s Gospel (e.g., John 1:11, etc.)?

4. Consider Pilate’s response to God’s King. In what way(s) did he disregard His innocence (cf. John 18:29, 35, 38; 19:4, 6)? Why do you think he disregarded the warning signs (cf. Matthew 27:17)? How does it make you feel that Pilate had Jesus scourged? What significance is there to the progression of Pilate’s presentation of Jesus as “the Man” and then later as “your King”?

5. How would you describe the response of the Jews to God’s King? What do you find most striking about their response? How does their response fit in with Scripture’s teaching of Israel as a wild vine (cf. Jeremiah 2:20-21; Isaiah 5:1-2; Romans 11)?

6. Considering the response of Jesus in this passage, what stands out most to you? What is it about the character and attitude of Jesus that should impress us most? Describe what it means to know and serve this kind of King. What does a King of His nature and magnitude deserve from us? Take some time to pray and ask God to help you obey and honor His King.
