The Work of the Holy Spirit

John 16:5-15

Life Group Questions

1. If you were not able to hear this week’s sermon, consider going to the church website and listening to it. What are some main ideas you gathered from the sermon? What, if any, questions did the sermon cause for you or do you desire to have additional clarification?

2. Explain Jesus’ statement in John 16:5 while considering passages such as John 13:36 and 14:5. Do you see any tension between these passages? What exactly was Jesus saying and what was His intent? In what way might the word now help us understand the meaning of this statement?

3. What things had Jesus said, specifically, that caused the disciples to be sorrowful? Do you think His message that His leaving was to their advantage helped relieve their sorrow? In what way was His departure to their advantage? Do you feel you have an advantage over the disciples who had Jesus in their midst? Explain.

4. Look back through Scripture and describe the relationship of the Father and the Son in sending the Holy Spirit (e.g., John 15:26). Take some time to look up the word Filioque and the issue related to this concept. On which side of this concept do you lean?

5. Why must Jesus have to depart in order for the Holy Spirit to come? Was the Spirit present on earth while Jesus existed as a human? Is the Spirit of God omnipresent?

6. Describe the role of the Holy Spirit in the world? Do you personally see the Holy Spirit convicting the whole world of sin? Do all people feel conviction or just some (e.g., disciples, the elect, etc.)? Of what specific sin does the the Holy Spirit convict the world?

7. What did Jesus mean by the saying that the world is judged? If the world is already judged is there any further judgment to come? If so, describe the judgment that is to come; both its manner and extent.

8. Jesus said the Spirit would not speak of His own initiative, but only what He hears. From whom does the Spirit receive the messages that He communicates? Do you feel the charismatic movement has a proper view of the Spirit’s role in the Trinity? Explain why or why not. Do you feel we as Christians and you personally limit the Holy Spirit in our views of His power and work? Explain why or why not.

9. In what way does the Holy Spirit work to glorify the Son? What specifically does the Spirit desire to disclose to us about the Father and Son? Do you feel as though you have an intimate and personal relationship with the Holy Spirit? Explain.
