Life Group Questions

1. If you were not able to hear this week’s sermon, consider going to the church website and listening to it. What are some main ideas that you gathered from the sermon? What, if any, questions did the sermon cause for you or do you desire to have additional clarification?

2. Describe the general attitude of the chief priests and Pharisees about Jesus. Do you think they believed Jesus actually performed signs (cf. vs. 47)? If so, why didn’t they believe Jesus?

3. List some ways in which Jesus posed a threat to the religious leaders of His day. Did you ever feel as though Jesus was a threat to your way of life before you were saved? Explain. Why do some people feel threatened by Jesus?

4. What did Caiaphas mean by his statement about one man dying for the nation? Do you think he understood the significance of what he was saying? Why or why not? What does John mean by stating that he did not say these things on his own initiative? Does God ever use sinful men for His glory? Explain.

5. Describe the worldview of John in verse 52. How does this verse coincide with John 3:16? Who are the children of God that are scattered abroad? Why do you think John used the word children instead of maybe people or elect? How can those whom God intended to gather be called children before they’re actually gathered?

6. Read the following Scriptures and state a few observations about God’s plan for the world: Genesis 12:1-3; Micah 4:2-3; Daniel 7:13-14; Psalm 96:3; Luke 2:9-11; Matthews 28:19-20; Revelation 5:9-10; 7:9-10.

7. What does it mean as a Christian that our identity is to be in Christ alone (cf. Colossians 2:9-10)? Do you ever struggle with your identify: who you are, your significance; your purpose in life? Explain. How can we know that our identity rests in Christ alone?

8. Describe the difference between being religious and being a Christian? How is having a relationship with Christ different than simply being religious? Describe what James meant by His description of true religion in James 1:26-27.

9. Read Psalm 14:1-3. Do you believe that without God people are devoid of knowledge and wisdom? Why or why not? To what extent do people, apart from God, lack knowledge and wisdom? Do you believe that absolutely nobody seeks after God at all by their own initiative or will? Explain.
