Life Group Questions

1. If you were not able to hear this week’s sermon, consider going to the church website and listening to it. What are some main ideas that you gathered from the sermon? What, if any, questions did the sermon cause for you or do you desire to have additional clarification?

2. Read and compare the farewell address of Jesus in John 13-17 with that of Moses in Deuteronomy 31. List any similarities and differences you see between these two addresses. Do you think John, the writer of the Gospel, intentionally made ties between these two addresses? If so, why?

3. In John 14:28 Jesus makes the profound statement, “The Father is greater than I.” In what way is the Father greater than Jesus? If the Father is greater than Jesus, does that make Jesus less divine or significant than the Father? Explain.

4. How does the Father being greater than Jesus coincide with such passages as John 1:1-2; 10:30; 20:28? Would it be wrong to think of Jesus as being in a subordinate position to the Father (cf. Hebrews 2:9; John 5:9; 13:1; 17:5)? Why or why not? Does this thought cause any problems for you? Explain.

5. Take some time to read about the doctrinal view known as the “Eternal Subordination of the Son.” You can google this topic and read views proposed by Wayne Grudem and Bruce Ware. Describe your thoughts about this view of the Son’s eternal relationship with the Father. Explain how the following passages relate to this view: Mark 13:32; 1 Corinthians 11:3; 15:27.

6. Describe the meaning of peace. Would you describe yourself as a person who has peace? Why or why not? How do we know if we truly have peace?

7. Read the following passages and list some thoughts that come to mind with regard to Christ being our peace: Isaiah 9:6; Psalm 85:10; 122:6; Luke 2:14; Colossians 1:19-20; Ephesians 2:14-18. How does the peace of Jesus Christ differ from the world’s peace?

8. The Holy Spirit is described as our advocate. How does having the Holy Spirit as our advocate provide us with peace? Describe some of the resources that we have as a result of the Holy Spirit indwelling us (cf. 1 John 2:27; John 2:22; Romans 8:26).
