1. If you were not at this week’s sermon, consider going to the church website and listening to it. What main ideas did you gain from the message? Do you have any questions?

2. What is the significance of the title “Son of God” with regard to Jesus Christ? What does that title tell us about his relationship with the Father? What does that title reveal about Christ’s nature and essence (cf. John 1:1-14)?

3. Why do you think the writer of Hebrews quoted so many Scriptures in this section? What does this tell us about the Old Testament’s significance and purpose? How does the Old Testament support our understanding of Christ?

4. Describe the meaning of Christ as the “begotten” Son of God. Does “begotten” mean that He is a created being? Explain why or why not. How does the writer’s use of the term “begotten” help us understand its application to Christ (cf. Hebrews 11:17 “only son”)?

5. How does the term “firstborn” (vs. 1:6) relate to Christ’s preexistence? How can Christ have been born in Bethlehem after others (e.g., John the Baptist) and yet be firstborn? Explain this term’s use in the following passages: Psalm 89:27-29; Colossians 1:15-18; Revelation 1:5.

6. Read Psalm 45. How does the writer of Hebrews understand Psalm 45? What character traits and attributes of Christ does the writer express in Hebrews 1:8-9? Who are the companions mentioned in 1:9 (cf. 2:10)?

7. Read 2 Samuel 7 and explain God’s promise to David. Do you think God intended to fulfill His promise through Solomon or somebody else? How do we know? How does the writer of Hebrews understand the promises of 2 Samuel 7?
