Life Group Questions
1. If you could not hear this week’s sermon, consider going to the church website and listening to it. What main ideas did you gain from the message? Do you have any questions?
2. Read through Judges chapters 6-8 and mention a few things that stand out to you. How would you describe Gideon from the point that he is first introduced until his death?
3. Describe some ways in which God’s grace is essential to our salvation, Christian walk and hope of eternity. Read the following passages and describe some significant aspects of God’s grace: Genesis 6:5; Exodus 12:36; 1 Chronicles 17:16; Acts 6:8; 1 Corinthians 15:10; Romans 7:18.
4. List some of your favorite names of God (e.g., Everlasting Father, Bread of Life, etc.). Why are names in Scripture often important? Consider the following passages and describe why the particular names were important: Genesis 17:5; 17:15-16; 32:28; John 1:41-42.
5. Explain why the writer sometimes calls Gideon by the name Jerubbaal. Where and how did Gideon receive the name Jerubbaal (cf. Judges 6:32)? Look up the meaning of the name Abimelech and describe its significance.
6. Do you think it was wrong for Gideon to have numerous wives (cf. Deuteronomy 17:17)? Why or why not? It appears that God still blessed Gideon despite his shortcomings. Do you believe God blesses us despite our faults and failures? Explain.
7. Describe some ways in which the people of Israel were unfaithful. What does it mean that they “whored” after other gods? What was so significant about the people forgetting God’s acts (cf. Deuteronomy 8:19; 25:19)? How well are you at remembering God’s great acts done on your behalf? What are some things that God has done for you?
8. The Israelites forgot about Gideon and his great service to them (cf. 8:37). Have you ever felt forgotten for good things you’ve done? Describe how it feels to be forgotten or unappreciated. Think of somebody that has been a blessing to you and take the time this week to express your appreciation to them.
