Life Group Questions

1. If you could not hear this week’s sermon, consider going to the church website and listening to it. What main ideas did you gain from the message? Do you have any questions?

2. What do you think were some of the factors that shaped Abimelech as a person? How do you think his father, Gideon, impacted his life? How do you think the people around him influenced his thinking and attitude? What are some things that positively and negatively shape people today?

3. Have you ever struggled with the feeling that bad, immoral and unethical people get away with their behavior? Does it ever seem like people who don’t love God prosper just as much if not more than God’s people? What is the truth about this matter (cf. Job 21:7-16)?

4. In what way is God an avenger? Is it wrong for us to think of God as an avenger (cf. Jeremiah 12:1; Romans 2:6-11; Revelation 20:11-15; Isaiah 3:11)?

5. Describe why knowing God as the Great Avenger should cause us to have peace (cf. Deuteronomy 32:35-38; Romans 12:19-21; Psalm 121:7)? Does it seem wrong to consider God as one who acts with vengeance? Why or why not?

6. Read 2 Corinthians 5:10. What thoughts come to mind when you think of appearing before the judgment seat of Christ? Do you think Christians will be judged by God in the end? Why or why not? If so, how does the judgment of Christians differ from God’s judgment of the wicked?

7. Read Ecclesiastes 12:13-14. Would you agree with the writer’s conclusions about the purpose and duty of mankind? Why or why not? How well are you doing with this ultimate duty? In what ways do you need to improve your obedience and devotion to God?
