1. If you were not able to hear this week’s sermon, consider going to the church website and listening to it. What are some main ideas that you gathered from the sermon? What, if any, questions did the sermon cause for you or do you desire to have additional clarification?

2. If you have the time, try to read through the entire book of John in as few settings as possible. What is your general impression of John’s Gospel account? What would say is John’s main purpose?

3. What does it mean that Jesus is the Word? Why did John use this designation to describe Jesus Christ (cf. John 1:1-18)? What is the significance of Jesus being “with” God in the beginning? What beginning is John referencing?

4. Why did John refer to Jesus as the Lamb of God (cf. John 1:29)? What is the significance of Jesus being a Lamb that God provided? How did Jesus differ from other lambs used in the sacrificial system?

5. Describe your understanding of John 3:16-17. What does it mean that God did not send His Son to judge the world? Does this passage conflict with passages like the following: John 5:22; 8:26; 12:47? Explain.

6. In what way are the Scriptures about Jesus (cf. John 5:39-47)? Does this mean that every single verse and word is about Jesus? Are we to read Jesus into every passage (i.e., typology). What does it mean that Scripture alone is sufficient for us? How much outside information is required for us to understand the writers (e.g., archeology, history, social setting, geography, etc.)?

7. How is Jesus greater than Abraham? How is Jesus greater than Moses? In what way is Jesus like Moses (cf. Duet 18:18)? Give some examples.

8. What does it mean to trust in Christ? In what areas of life do you sense a need to grow in faith? How is it that we grow in faith?

9. In John 17 we have what is known as the High Priestly Prayer of Jesus. What stands out to you about the structure of this prayer? What stands out to you about the content of the prayer? How can we and should we use this prayer as a guide for our own prayers? Take time to pray in accordance with Jesus’ prayer in John 17.
