Life Group Questions

1. If you were not at this week’s sermon, consider going to the church website and listening to it. What main ideas did you gain from the message? Do you have any questions?

2. Why do you think the Bible has hymns and poetry? What would be the intended effect of placing such literary works within larger narrative texts?

3. Consider some of the Old Testament hymns and how they are used in the Bible. What kind of hymn would you designate Psalm 51 and 86? What is the purpose of the Song of Moses in Exodus 15?

4. Look at the Book of Luke, chapters one and two. What songs or hymns do you see in this portion of scripture? Why do you think Luke recorded songs to communicate his message? How would these texts differ if they were only narrative accounts?

5. Look up the word “Christology” in a bible dictionary. What two Greek words make up this word? What is the focus of this study of theology, and why is it significant? What key aspects of Christ are the focus of Christology?

6. Read the four Christological Hymns we discussed in John 1:1-18, Philippians 2:5-11, Colossians 1:15-20, and Hebrews 1:3-4. What are some common topics addressed by these hymns? What are some significant theological areas addressed in these hymns? How might these hymns help us learn and teach about the person of Christ?
