2. Define rivalry/selfish ambition and describe some of the common characteristics associated with it. Is this characteristic good or bad? Why should we avoid the temptation of selfish ambition (cf. James 3:13-16)?

3. Read the following passages and state some general observations:
– Psalm 10:3 –
– Psalm 119:36 –
– Proverbs 10:2 –
– Proverbs 10:16 –
– Proverbs 15:27 –
– Proverbs 20:17 –
– Proverbs 28:16 –

4. Read Ezekiel 34 and describe the general scene taking place. Who were the shepherds, and of what fault were they guilty (cf. 1Peter 5:1-2)? Why was this so offensive to God?

5. What does it mean to deny ourselves in following Christ? Why does Christ say that it is impossible for us to follow him unless we deny ourselves (cf. Mark 8:34)? What are some areas that you need to work on with denying yourself so that you can follow Christ better?

6. Why is selfish ambition so dangerous to the church? Describe the attitude we should have in place of selfish ambition (cf. Philippians 2:1-4). Describe the perfect example that Christ gave us to counter selfish ambition (cf. Philippians 2:5-11; Ezekiel 34:15-23; Matthew 20:25-28).
