Life Group Questions

1. If you could not hear this week’s sermon, consider going to the church website and listening to it. What main ideas did you gain from the message? Do you have any questions?

2. Why do you think the writer in verse 22 gives us Abimelech’s time frame of when he ruled? What is significant about this? How is this different from all the previous characters in the narrative of the Judges?

3. Compare and contrast Gideon with his son Abimelech, specifically their character. What does the Lord do to each of them with regard to God’s Spirit and the spirit God sends (c.f. Judges 6:34, 9:23)? What does this show us about the Lord?

4. Throughout the book of Judges we can see the Lord working out His plan. How does verse 23 remind us of His sovereignty? Is God in control of both “good” and “bad” things that happen? Look at the following passages. What do they show us about the thought of God being in control of all things: James 1:17-18, 1 Samuel 16:14, 2 Corinthians 12:7-10, Job 2:10?

5. We can see the struggle for power with the characters mentioned in the text. This reminds us that the Lord is the True King. What do the following passages tell us about the Lord: Isaiah 37:16, Psalm 47:2, Psalm 95:3, Isaiah 6:5?

6. When Christ returns there will be no doubt about Him being King. Read Revelation 19:11-16. What does this passage show us about our Lord’s return? How will He return? What form will He take? What will He do? What does verse 16 tell us about the Lord?

7. Read the following passages: Psalm 147:4-5, Jeremiah 10:12-13, Romans 1:16, 1 Corinthians 1:18. What do you notice about the reference to God’s power? What does He have power over? How does this encourage you?
