Galatians 5:16-25

Life Group Questions

1. If you were not at this week’s sermon, consider going to the church website and listening to it. What main ideas did you gain from the message? Do you have any questions?

2. Describe the difference between envy, covetousness, and jealousy. You may want to look each of these words up in a Bible dictionary. Do a word search to get a general idea of how these words are used in the Bible.

3. Have you ever struggled with envy toward somebody else? What were some things that were the focus of your envy? How does envy affect our relationships with other people (cf. Genesis 37:11; Acts 7:9; Philippians 1:15-18; Mark 15:6-10)?

4. Read the following passages and provide some observations about envy:
– Proverbs 3:31-32
– Proverbs 14:29-30
– Proverbs 23:17-18
– Proverbs 27:4

5. How do our acts of envy often reveal a dissatisfaction with God in the following areas: God’s provision, providence, timing, measure of blessings, and prerogative? How does seeking contentment in God alone help us deal with envy (cf. Psalm 27:4; 42:1-2; Luke 10:42; Colossians 3:1-5)?

6. Read 1Timothy 6:8-10 and Hebrews 13:5. Take some time to evaluate your life with respect to the teaching of these passages. In what areas do you struggle? In what areas do you need to grow? Take some time to ask God to provide you with wisdom and guidance.
