Life Group Questions

1. If you were not able to hear this week’s sermon, consider going to the church website and listening to it. What are some main ideas you gathered from the sermon? What questions, if any, did the sermon cause for you or do you desire to have additional clarification?

2. What connection do you see between this passage and John’s prologue (John 1:1-18)? How does John’s statement about Christ in John 1:1 differ from the declaration of Thomas in John 20:28? How should we respond to those who say Jesus is not God?

3. Read the following passages: John 1:1; 14, 29, 41, 49; 3:2; 4:42; 5:18; 5:39; 6:14; 11:25; 15:26; 19:19. Describe the general picture John paints for us of Jesus. What aspect of Jesus’ nature stands out to you most?

4. Apparently the disciples told Thomas several times that they had seen the Lord (cf. 20:25). Why do you think Thomas had difficulty believing them? Do you think you would have done better than Thomas? Does it seem fair that Thomas is often cast as the “doubting” disciple (cf. John 11:16; 14:5)? Explain.

5. What conditions did Thomas require in order to believe. Why do you think John included this story in his Gospel account? Have you ever been guilty of placing conditions on your faith? What kind of faith does God desire for us to have as Christians (cf. 2 Corinthians 5:7). Would you say you do well at displaying sincere faith? Explain.

6. If Thomas did not believe in the resurrection of Christ, why do you think he met together with the other disciples? What should be the primary reason for which we gather together as believers on Sunday? What are some less worthy reasons for which people attend “church” on Sunday?

7. Describe how important gathering together for Sunday worship is to you and your family. How has COVID made you appreciate the privilege of Christian fellowship and corporate worship? Do you feel as though you are missing something when you’re not able to attend worship? Explain.

8. Describe the manner and content of Jesus’ address to Thomas? How would you feel if you were in Thomas’ position? What lessons do you think Thomas learned that day? What does John intend for us to learn from Thomas?

9. In what way are we blessed for believing in Christ although we have not seen Him? Describe why you believe in the person of Christ and His resurrection. How can we encourage others to believe in Christ?
