1. If you could not hear this week’s sermon, consider going to the church website and listening to it. What main ideas did you gain from the message? Do you have any questions?

2. Compare and contrast the previous attitude of the people toward Gideon with that described in this section. What do you think caused the difference of opinion and attitude toward Gideon?

3. What is the role of the Holy Spirit in the Godhead? In what way does God work by His Spirit? What is the significance of the Spirit of God appearing at the beginning of the Bible (cf. Genesis 1:2)?

4. Read the following passages and list at least three observations: Zechariah 4:6; John 6:63; 14:25-26; 16:13; Matthew 26:41; 28:19.

5. In what way was the Holy Spirit involved in the birth, life and ministry of Christ (cf. Matthew 1:18; 12:18; 12:28; Luke 1:35; John 1:32-33; Romans 1:4)?

6. When you consider the Holy Spirit, do you primarily think of the Old or New Testament? Explain why. Describe some ways in which the Holy Spirit manifested Himself in the Old Testament (cf. Genesis 41:38; Exodus 31:1-3; Numbers 11:17; 24:2; 27:18; 2 Samuel 23:1-2; Matthew 22:41-44; 2 Kings 2:9).

7. What does the writer mean by saying that God had given His “good Spirit” to Israel in the wilderness? What benefit was the Spirit of God to the people?

8. Why do you think the writer of Judges explicitly states the idea of the Holy Spirit working in various judges (cf. Judges 3:9-10; 11:29; 13:25; 14:4; 14:19; 15:14)? What does it mean that Gideon was clothed by the Holy Spirit (cf. Luke 24:49)? How does this act of the Spirit differ from the New Testament indwelling?

9. What was the promise of the Father concerning the Holy Spirit? Explain the significance of the following passages: Ezekiel 36:19, 26; Joel 2:28-29.

10. List at least three benefits we enjoy as Christians due to the gift of the Holy Spirit (cf. Romans 5:5; 8:9, 26; 15:13; Ephesians 1:13; 2:18; Act 1:8).
