Life Group Questions

1. If you could not hear this week’s sermon, consider going to the church website and listening to it. What main ideas did you gain from the message? Do you have any questions?

2. What does it mean to show allegiance to God? How seriously do you think God regards the issue of our allegiance to Him (cf. Deuteronomy 6:4-6; Exodus 20:2-6; 34:11-14)? How would you rate your level of loyalty to God? Explain how and why you arrived at this rating.

3. Look back through Scripture and describe any observations related to the worship of Baal and Ashtaroth (cf. Numbers 25; etc.). Why do you think Israel struggled so much with worshiping other gods (cf. Judges 2:11-14)? What are some false Gods that are worshiped today?

4. What lesson should we learn from how God commanded Gideon to tear down the altar of false gods? Does it seem unloving that God would deny people the right to worship how and when they want to do so? Explain why or why not.

5. What is an idol? Define the meaning of an idol (you may want to look in a Bible dictionary or do an internet search). Do you believe idols still exist today? Do you think we need to be precautious of idols (cf. 1 Corinthians 12:2; 2 Corinthians 6:16; 1 Thessalonians 1:9; 1 John 5:21)? Explain.

6. Describe how our identity and self-esteem may become an idol (cf. Galatians 2:20; 5:24; Colossians 3:3). What are some precautions we should take concerning our desire for money (cf. Matthew 6:24)?

7. Consider the following list and describe any that pose a threat to your allegiance and obedience to God: entertainment, relationships, sexually related matters, physical fitness, comfort, leisure, work/profession, and technology. Consider finding a Christian friend to help you combat these struggles.

8. What were some of Gideon’s struggles in carrying out God’s plan and purpose for him? How well do you think Gideon did with his task? What are some lessons we can learn from Gideon’s circumstances and actions?

9. Take some time to ask the Lord to reveal any altars that need to be removed from your life; idols that may exist in your life. Ask Him to help you have the courage to tear down those altars. Pray for courage to obey Him and exalt Him above all others.
