Life Group Questions

1. If you could not hear this week’s sermon, consider going to the church website and listening to it. What main ideas did you gain from the message? Do you have any questions?

2. Describe what is meant by “the battle is the Lord’s.” In what sense is the Lord a mighty warrior or man of war (cf. Exodus 15:2; Isaiah 42:13)? How does the image of God as a warrior compare with common thoughts about His nature?

3. List some observations about Gideon’s actions prior to and during the battle. Describe any admirable qualities of Gideon’s character. Would you consider Gideon a good leader? Explain why or why not.

4. Read the following passages and describe God’s role in the battles we face: Genesis 12:3; Exodus 14:13-14; Deuteronomy 11:23; Joshua 6:15-16; 8:1; 1 Samuel 17:46-47; 2 Chronicles 20:15.

5. List some battles you are currently facing in life? Would you say that those battles belong to the Lord? Explain some ways in which we can take our battles and turn them over to the Lord.

6. Explain what it means that Gideon worshipped (cf. 7:15). Why did he worship? Does his worship seem premature, being that the battle had not actually been won yet? How should we apply this principle of worship to our own lives (cf. Romans 8:37-39; 1 Corinthians 15:55-58; 1 John 5:1)?

7. Explain some ways in which we can use the experience of our victories to encourage others. Who are some people you know that are currently facing battles and need encouragement? Consider taking the time to reach out to them and provide support.

8. The battle indeed is the Lord’s, but He has called us as participants in His battles. As our writer tells us, each person stood in their position for the battle (vs. 21). How does the Lord want you to participate in His work of the Gospel and the making of disciples? What spiritual gifts has God given you (cf. 1 Corinthians 12; Romans 12).
