Life Group Questions

1. If you could not hear this week’s sermon, consider going to the church website and listening to it. What main ideas did you gain from the message? Do you have any questions?

2. What are some common fears that people deal with in life? List some fears with which you struggle. What is fear, and what is its source (cf. 1 John 4:18)? What is God’s response to our fear as His children?

3. Read the following passages and describe God’s remedy for our fear: Genesis 15:1; Numbers 14:7-9; Joshua 1:1-9; Daniel 10:18-19; Matthew 14:27.

4. In our passage, God calls and commissions Gideon to a task. Describe Gideon’s task and overall response to God’s call. List some ways in which God encouraged Gideon to follow through.

5. Have you ever struggled with the call of God upon your life or with particular tasks He wanted you to do? If so, explain. How can the following elements contribute to our fear of answering God’s call: feeling inadequate, lacking experience, unsure of results, anticipating rejection, disrupting our comfort?

6. Feeling alone or sensing a lack of support often contributes to our fear (Exodus 18:18; 1 Kings 19:9-10; etc.). Describe how the godly partnership of fellow believers can help us in our Christian walk (cf. Exodus 17:12-13; Romans 16:1-4). Who are some people God has provided in your life to help and encourage you? List some people God may want to use you to help and encourage.

7. Look at the following passages: John 14:26; Matthews 28:19-20; Hebrews 13:5. What are some key promises which God has made to us that serve as encouragement for faithfully serving Him?

8. If you are struggling with fear, considering the following passage: “So we can confidently say, ‘The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?’” (Hebrews 13:6). Maybe you need to pray that text today!
