Life Group Questions

1. If you could not hear this week’s sermon, consider going to the church website and listening to it. What main ideas did you gain from the message? Do you have any questions?

2. Why do you think the writer expresses the idea of no king being over Israel four times in the final portion of the book (cf. 17:6; 18:1; 19:1; 21:25)? What implications come with the statement that there was no king?

3. What does everybody “doing what was right in their eyes” mean? Why is that mode of thinking wrong? How does that mindset stand against God’s instruction? Can you see this mindset at work today in our society and culture? What about its presence in churches?

4. Read the following passages and comment on their significance concerning our having a King: Psalm 2:1-6; Isaiah 9:6-7; Matthew 2:1-2; John 18:36: Ephesians 1:20-23; Revelation 19:13-16; Daniel 7:13-14; 1 Timothy 6:13-15.

5. Describe the difference between being religious and true worship of God. List some ways the woman and her son, Micah, were religious but not true worshipers of God. Read Colossians 2:20-23 and Philippians 3:5-7 and explain why false religion is worthless. Are there any areas where your religion is not true worship? Explain.

6. Why is idolatry such a serious sin against God (cf. Leviticus 26:1; Deuteronomy 27:15)? Why does God prohibit images and idols from being made (cf. Exodus 20:4-5)? Would you consider images (pictures, drawings, figurines) of God, Jesus, angels, demons, etc. as a violation of God’s will? Explain.

7. List some ways in which we have self-centered characteristics in this passage. In what manner was Micah focused on self-centered goals (cf. vs. 13)? How might we see the Levite as acting in self-interest? Do you struggle with self-centeredness? What are some common indications that we are acting in a self-centered manner?
