Life Group Questions

1. If you were not able to hear this week’s sermon, consider going to the church website and listening to it. What are some main ideas that you gathered from the sermon? What, if any, questions did the sermon cause for you or do you desire to have additional clarification?

2. Describe the significance of the word “therefore” in John 12:1. What is this word pointing to in the previous section? How might John be using this word to tie together the previous section and the idea of the Passover?

3. Describe Jesus’ attitude regarding His death. How did His view of His death differ from the average person? Do you think Jesus was intimidated by His upcoming death or death itself? Why or why not? (cf. John 10:18; 12:27; 14:3; Mark 10:45)

4. What are some aspects of Martha’s character that stand out to you from a biblical perspective? How does John present Martha (cf. John 11:20-21; 12:2)? How does Luke present Martha and why do you think he does so (cf. Luke 10:40)?

5. Read 1 Peter 4:10-11. What gifts have you received from the Lord; how has He blessed you with resources and abilities? In what way can you better employ your gifts for the benefit of others and the Kingdom of God? In what way can you improve as a steward of God’s gifts?

6. In what way might the actions of Lazarus in John 12:2 reflect the results of what took place in John 11? What were two responses to the living witness of Lazarus in John 12? Have you ever felt people were “out to get you” because you represented the work of Christ? Explain.

7. What are your first thoughts when you read about Mary’s action of anointing Jesus with perfume? Do you think it was excessive or a little unnecessary? Can our worship be “excessive”? Why or why not? Have you ever seen somebody worshiping and thought they were acting excessively (2 Samuel 6:14-16)? Is there such a thing as “inappropriate” worship? Explain your thoughts.

8. Was Judas correct in his assessment of Mary’s extravagant worship? Why or why not? What was the real issue of Judas’ concern? How do the attitudes and actions of Judas reflect the love of money (cf. Matthew 26:14-16)?

9. What impresses you most about Jesus’ defense of Mary’s actions? How do you think Mary felt as a result of the way Jesus defended her? How should we feel that Jesus watches over us? Expound upon Jesus’ statement in verse 8.
