Life Group Questions

1. If you were not able to hear this week’s sermon, consider going to the church website and listening to it. What are some main ideas that you gathered from the sermon? What, if any, questions did the sermon cause for you or do you desire to have additional clarification?

2. What does Jesus mean by the statement that His soul is troubled. Consider the use of this word troubled in other passages (e.g., Matthew 2:3; 14:26; Luke 1:12; 24:38; John 11:33; 13:21; 14:1, 27). Was Jesus guilty of doing something He told us not to do? Was this a sign of Jesus lacking in faith or confidence? Explain.

3. How does the second part of John 12:27 help us understand the first part? Was Jesus tempted to ask the Father to remove Him from this hour? Exactly what is this hour pointing to; to what is Jesus referring? Would it have been wrong for Him to ask for the hour to be removed?

4. Describe the makeup of the crowd/people in this passage. Why did some people understand the voice of God and others did not? Why did some people believe and yet others did not? What was the purpose of the voice of God being heard by both groups? What have you seen cause people difficulty with believing in Christ?

5. What does it mean for Jesus to be lifted up? How does this idea of being lifted up relate to John 3:14? Do you believe John expects us to make a tie between the two verses? What kind of death did this action represent and foretell? Why was this type of death necessary?

6. Explain the statement of Jesus that He would draw all men to Himself. Does this mean that Jesus intended to save all people? Why or why not? How would you respond to someone who claims, based on this text, that all people are saved? Does John’s Gospel present the idea that all will be saved (cf. 3:16; 6:65, etc.)?

7. What or who is the Light mentioned in this passage? Describe the significance of Jesus saying we must believe in the Light. What does it mean to believe in the Light? What are some things that demonstrate walking in the Light?

8. Describe John’s use of Isaiah 6 and 53 prophesies. What does it mean that certain people could not believe and does this differ from simply saying some did not believe? Is God responsible for the people of this prophesy not believing; did He do it against their will? Explain. Do you think God still hardens hearts and conceals revelation from people today? Explain.
