Life Group Questions

1. If you could not hear this week’s sermon, consider going to the church website and listening to it. What main ideas did you gain from the message? Do you have any questions?

2. Why is it important to think of God as the true King? Describe some of the qualities and characteristics of our true King (cf. Micah 5:2; Zechariah 6:13, 9:9; 1 Samuel 2:10; Isaiah 40:10; Jeremiah 23:5; Psalm 2:6; 8:6; 22:28; 103:19-22).

3. Describe your thoughts about Gideon refusing to rule over Israel (cf. 8:22-23). Why do you think he refused such an honor for himself and his sons? Do you think you would have struggled to do the same as Gideon? Explain.

4. What does it mean to exalt the Lord? List some ways in which we can exalt God. Read the following passages and describe the manner in which different individuals exalted God: Genesis 22:14; 41:16; Exodus 14:14; Daniel 2:26-45; John 1:29, 36; Psalm 99.

5. Why do you think it is so hard for us to deny ourselves? What are some specific areas in which it is difficult for you to deny yourself? Why is it necessary for us to deny ourselves in order to follow Christ (cf. Luke 9:23)?

6. Describe what constitutes an idol. What are some idols that exist in our culture today? What are some possible idols that exist in the church? List any idols that you find difficult to resist.

7. Read Exodus 32. Explain how the making of the golden ephod resembles the events surrounding the golden calf incident? Do you think the writer of Judges intended for us to link these events? Why or why not?

8. Read Hebrews 12:1-2 and list anything you need to “lay aside” for the sake of following Christ. How well are you doing at running the race that is set before you? What are some ways in which the example of Christ can help you in your own Christian walk?
