1. If you could not hear this week’s sermon, consider going to the church website and listening to it. What main ideas did you gain from the message? Do you have any questions?

2. How would you define the phrase “believers’ baptism?” What Bible verses would you use to teach about believers’ baptism? Discuss the importance of the Gospel in “believers’ baptism.”

3. Define the word “baptism.” Read Matthew 3:11 and discuss three ways the word “baptize” is used. Do a word search on the word “baptism” and discuss some of the additional ways the word is used.

4. Read Matthew 3:1-12. Define and discuss the ministry of John the Baptist (cf. Acts 19:4). Describe the similarities and yet differences between John’s and Jesus’ ministries.

5. Read Matthew 3:13-17. Discuss and explain the reason Jesus needed to be baptized (cf. 3:15)? Did Jesus have to be specifically baptize by John? How does our baptism differ from that of Jesus?

6. According to the writer in Matthew 3:16, “when Jesus was baptized, immediately He went up from the water.” What image does this give you of the mode of Jesus’ baptism? Why do you think we have different views on the mode of baptism today? Do you think this is an important issue? Why or why not?

7. Read Matthew 3:16-17. Identify the three major events that took place at the baptism of Christ and their significance.

8. There are many occurrences of believers’ baptism in the New Testament. Read Acts 8:35-38; Acts 16:25-34; Acts 18:6-11. What stands out to you about these baptisms? If you have been baptized, describe what led you to it and what it means to you.
